Can you prescribe weight-loss medications like Ozempic or Wegovy?

GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide (Ozempic®, Wegovy®), tirzepatide (Mounjaro®), and liraglutide (Saxenda®) may be prescribed after a complete medical evaluation. In Brazil, the main options available are Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro®, and Saxenda®, which can be prescribed and purchased only with a doctor's prescription. In Argentina, Ozempic® and semaglutide oral (Rybelsus®) are available through pharmacies, also requiring an official medical prescription following an in-person or telehealth consultation. Availability may vary depending on local pharmacy stock and national regulations, and all treatments must be started under medical supervision.

Can you prescribe anxiety or depression medications?

Yes. Most commonly used medications — such as Lexapro (escitalopram), Zoloft (sertraline), and Prozac (fluoxetine) — are available in both Argentina and Brazil. However, these medications are prescription-only and can be provided only after a medical consultation with a licensed doctor who evaluates your symptoms and determines the appropriate treatment.

Can I get my foreign prescription refilled locally?

Yes. During your online visit, a licensed doctor will review your current medication and issue a valid local prescription if appropriate.

Can I get antibiotics or other medications online?

If clinically indicated, yes. The doctor must first evaluate your symptoms during the consultation. Controlled or restricted medications follow national regulations and always require an official prescription.

How long does it take to receive my prescription?

Usually within minutes after your consultation. Prescriptions are sent by email or WhatsApp in official format, ready for use at local pharmacies.

Can I use my foreign prescription locally?

Foreign prescriptions are not automatically valid, but your CareThere doctor can review your current treatment and issue a local prescription when appropriate.

Can I get antibiotics online in Brazil or Argentina?

In both Brazil and Argentina, antibiotics are strictly prescription-only medications. Pharmacies are not allowed to sell or deliver antibiotics without a valid prescription from a licensed doctor. This rule applies whether you're buying in person or ordering through an app, delivery service, or online platform.

Can I buy medication without a prescription in Argentina or Brazil?

No. Most medications require a valid medical prescription in both Argentina and Brazil, and pharmacies are legally required to verify it before dispensing. To see the complete list of medications that require a prescription, visit our Medications Requiring Prescription page.

For Travelers & Expats

I'm traveling to South America. What should I know about healthcare?

We recommend scheduling a pre-travel consultation to discuss vaccinations, travel health precautions, and local healthcare systems. We can also provide ongoing support during your stay and help with any health concerns that arise.

Is guidance on the health system and insurance included in the consultation?

Yes, during your consultation, we can explain the healthcare system in Argentina and Brazil and recommend the best insurance options tailored to your needs, at no extra cost.

What types of consultations are available?

We offer both telehealth consultations via video call for patients across all of Argentina and Brazil, and in-home visits within Buenos Aires and surrounding areas.

Can you help with health insurance claims?

Yes, we can provide the necessary medical documentation and reports to support your insurance claims.

Do you provide 24/7 support?

While we are not a 24/7 emergency service, our team strives to offer extended-hour support for non-urgent medical needs. Appointment requests and messages are reviewed throughout the day, including evenings and weekends, so you'll usually receive a quick response even outside regular business hours. For urgent or life-threatening situations, please go directly to your nearest hospital or call local emergency services (107 in Argentina, 192 in Brazil).

Is healthcare free in Argentina?

Argentina has a dual healthcare system. Emergency care remains free for everyone. For permanent residents, all medical services are free. Since May 2025 (Decree 366/2025), foreign visitors must present health insurance or make prior payment for non-urgent consultations and treatments in public hospitals. Most expats and travelers prefer private healthcare, which offers faster service, English-speaking doctors, and better facilities. CareThere works within the private system to provide quality, accessible care with transparent pricing for international patients.

If you have international insurance, we can provide a detailed receipt for reimbursement, and some of our doctors also accept Blue Cross Blue Shield Global Solutions (GeoBlue) directly. View complete pricing details.

What payment methods do you accept?
